Earlier this week, The Information reported that Amazon brought in $1.4 Million in 2019 of Alexa Skill Revenue in 2019, falling short of a $5.5 million target.
We decided to take a look at the number of skills in the US marketplace that offered in-skill purchases (ISP). Of the 51 295 skill in our US database, 409 skills offer ISPs. You can take a look the skills that offer ISP in the table below.
From this data, we find that 0.8% of all US skills offer ISP. However, it’s important to note that our database is not complete (there are apparently more than 51k skills in the US marketplace). Interestingly, some skill developers, including those from the very popular Invoked Apps, offer purchases for additional content for their skills without Amazon flagging it as being a skill that offers an ISP.
12-01-2020 EDIT: Invoked Apps’ skills now show that they offer ISP.
Looking at this data, it’s not surprising that the Alexa purchases fell short of Amazon’s expectation. Another way to look at this is that there is a small number of skills that are making a considerable amount of money from ISPs (take look at how many skills have at least 5 ratings).
